Out of the Dark Ages: 3 Digital Tools Every Church Needs
By Rev. Caleb Davis
Let’s be honest—some of our Churches are stuck in the Stone Age when it comes to technology. And I get it. The Gospel never changes, but the way we communicate it must. We’re not called to blend into the world, but we are called to reach it. And if we’re going to reach people where they are, we’ve got to step into the digital age.
So let me give you 3 simple and powerful tools that any Church—yes, even yours—can start using this week to reach more people and stop being invisible.
1. Get a Google Account: Your Digital Launchpad
The very first step is create a Google (Gmail) account. Why? Because it opens the door to everything: YouTube, your website, social media, even your Google Business listing.
Think of it as your digital keychain. With just one account, you can unlock the tools that help your Church be seen, heard, and found.
2. Social Media: Reach Every Generation
Once you’ve got that Gmail account, use the Google Account to create a Facebook page, Instagram account, and YouTube channel for your Church. Use the Meta Business Suite to link both Facebook and Instagram so that every post you make can go out to both platforms—reaching both grandma and Gen Z.
Tip: Use a unified username across platforms. For example, our Church uses @wattschapelchurch for Facebook, Instagram, and even our Gmail. This makes it easier for guests to find us, remember us, and recognize us.
You may ask, "Well, creating the pages are the easy part, but what do I post?" Don’t just post “verse of the day” graphics. Post pictures of real people in real moments. Show your choir practicing. Show a kid smiling in Sunday School. Show a deacon helping someone. Show, don’t just tell. People want to see what it feels like to be part of your Church family.
3. Create a Website: Your Digital Welcome Center
Here’s the truth—not everyone has Social Media. So if you’re only on one account like Facebook, you’re invisible to a lot of people.
Good news: your Gmail account gives you access to Google Sites, a simple and completely free website builder. Every Church, no matter the size, needs a basic website.
What should be on it?
Service times
Church address (with map)
What you believe
Sermons (or at least sermon outlines)
About page (pastor, leadership)
Contact form (so people can reach you!)
You don’t need something fancy. You just need something findable.
BONUS: Google Business Listing = More Visibility
Your Church should be on Google Business. Why? Because when someone searches “Church near me,” you want to show up! This is called SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
A Google Business profile:
Boosts your search ranking
Shows your hours and location on Google Maps
Lets people leave reviews (which builds trust)
Makes you look credible and current
Final Word: Stop Waiting. Start Building.
We’re not talking about gimmicks. We’re talking about stewardship. If you’ve got the greatest news in the world—the Gospel of Jesus Christ—don’t hide it behind outdated systems. Let your light shine online just like it does in the sanctuary.
These three steps won’t solve everything, but they’ll get you out of the dark ages and into the conversation. The digital world isn’t going away. But with the right tools, your Church doesn’t have to be left behind.
